We’ve said it before, smart investments mean smart service for our customers.
In 2012 we began our Clear Reads Automated Meter Reading (AMR) program and have since installed this efficient and effective technology at more than 392,000 homes and businesses throughout our service area. With AMR, we’ve dramatically decreased estimated bills from 17% in 2011 to approximately 4% at the end of 2016. And, with the ability to more accurately measure your water usage through automatic daily and even hourly automated meter reads, we’re able to focus on accurate, on-time bills and provide more information to help you control your utility costs and protect your home. Most importantly, the Clear Reads AMR program has been instrumental in allowing us to ensure 0% rate increases for 2016, 2017 and 2018.
These numbers tell a tremendous story about the success of Cleveland Water’s Clear Reads AMR program in providing enhanced service and reasonable rates to our customers. But, the Clear Reads AMR system is also an efficient use of technology to support Cleveland Water’s operations.
Of the more than 392,000 Clear Reads AMR meters installed in homes and businesses over the past five years, less than 1.5% have needed repair or replacement (that’s an average of less than 0.3% annually). And, nearly half that required service in the last five years were not due to malfunction but rather were due to accidental or preventable damage such as frozen or burst meters during extreme cold, instances where the cable that connects the meter and the endpoint become disconnected, and, unfortunately, illegal tampering. Fortunately, another key feature of AMR is that the system can send alerts when there is something wrong that we need to investigate. This ultimately means less damage for you, less waste of a valuable resource, and less cost all around.
